Course Description

Course Overview The G11–12 English Literature Intensive Program is designed for senior high school students preparing for University Preparation English courses and post-secondary academic expectations. At this stage, English is no longer about understanding the storyline. Students are expected to analyze complex literary texts, evaluate authorial choices, and write structured, evidence-based arguments. Many students find this transition challenging, especially when analysis lacks depth or writing does not meet academic standards. This program provides systematic training in: Advanced literary reading → Critical analysis → Academic literary writing It is ideal for students who want to strengthen performance in senior English courses and build skills essential for university-level study. Learning Objectives By the end of the 30-hour program, students will be able to: • Analyze novels, plays, short stories, and poetry at an academic level • Interpret complex themes, character development, and conflict • Analyze literary devices, style, and author’s craft • Integrate cultural and contextual understanding into analysis • Support arguments with precise textual evidence • Write clear, structured, and academically appropriate literary analysis Course Structure (30 Hours) Module 1|Advanced Literary Reading & Close Analysis (6h) Develop close-reading strategies and analyze texts at multiple levels of meaning. Module 2|Theme, Context & Authorial Intent (6h) Analyze complex themes, historical and cultural context, and how authorial intent shapes interpretation. Module 3|Literary Devices & Stylistic Analysis (6h) Study symbolism, imagery, tone, structure, and how stylistic choices convey meaning. Module 4|Academic Literary Writing & Argumentation (6h) Develop strong thesis statements, structured arguments, effective evidence integration, and academic tone. Module 5|Integrated Literary Study & University Preparation (6h) Apply skills through extended analysis, discussion, timed writing, and assessment-style tasks aligned with Ontario rubrics. Learning Outcomes After completing the program, students typically: • Read complex literature with greater confidence and independence • Produce deeper, more focused literary analysis • Use textual evidence accurately and effectively • Write with clearer structure and stronger academic voice • Perform more consistently in senior English courses • Transition more smoothly into university-level reading and writing
