Grades: 5–6 Small Group (3–8 students) Once per week · 1.5–2 hours per session 18 Hours Course Overview The G5–6 Reading Skills Intensive Program is designed for students who read slowly, struggle to understand longer texts, or cannot clearly identify main ideas and key details. This is not a writing class and not test drilling. The program focuses exclusively on strengthening core reading skills, helping students move from inefficient, effort-heavy reading to purposeful, confident, and accurate comprehension—an essential step before entering G7–8. Learning Objectives • Improve reading comprehension from word-level to meaning-level • Learn effective and transferable reading strategies • Build vocabulary understanding through context, not memorization • Increase reading stamina (20–30 minutes) • Read longer texts with greater efficiency and confidence Course Structure Module 1|Reading Reset: Habits, Efficiency & Self-Awareness (3h) Students identify inefficient reading habits and learn how to read with purpose, handle longer and more complex sentences, upgrade prediction skills, and apply new strategies through guided reading. Module 2|Vocabulary in Context (3h) Learning to infer word meaning through context, understanding academic vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, and reading without stopping at every unfamiliar word. Module 3|Main Idea & Key Details (3h) Identifying main ideas, distinguishing them from details, understanding paragraph structure, and summarizing paragraphs clearly. Module 4|Reading Comprehension Skills (4.5h) Training in literal vs. inferential questions, using text evidence, answering “why” and “how” questions, and understanding common school reading tasks. Module 5|Non-fiction & School Text Reading (2.5h) Developing skills for informational texts, using headings, charts, and subheadings, and preparing for Science and Social Studies reading. Module 6|Reading Fluency & Review (2h) Improving reading fluency through combined oral and silent reading, integrated practice, and personalized feedback. Learning Outcomes • Read faster with stronger comprehension • Feel less resistance toward longer texts • Clearly explain main ideas and key information • Achieve higher accuracy on reading tasks • Be well prepared for G7–8 academic reading Who This Program Is For • Grade 5–6 students with limited reading volume • Students who read slowly or inefficiently • Students whose writing struggles stem from weak reading
