Course Description

Course Overview The G7–8 Reading Skills Intensive Program is designed for students who read slowly, struggle with comprehension, or cannot consistently identify key ideas in longer texts. The program focuses exclusively on systematic reading skill development, helping students transition from passive, effort-heavy reading to active, efficient, and confident comprehension—an essential foundation before entering G9. Learning Objectives • Increase reading volume and stamina • Master transferable reading strategies • Clearly distinguish main ideas, details, inference, and author’s purpose • Improve comprehension of academic (non-fiction) texts • Read faster while maintaining accuracy • Build a strong foundation for Grade 9 Academic English, OSSLT, and subject-based reading Course Structure (18 Hours) Module 1|Reading Foundations & Habits (3h) Correcting ineffective reading habits, understanding what effective reading looks like, diagnosing speed and comprehension, and building sustainable reading routines using Lexile awareness. Module 2|Core Reading Strategies (4h) Learning how to read efficiently using skimming, scanning, predicting, identifying main ideas and details, using context clues, and effective annotation. Module 3|Vocabulary in Reading Context (3h) Developing academic vocabulary through context, prefixes, suffixes, and roots, and learning how to move past non-essential unfamiliar words without losing comprehension. Module 4|Fiction & Non-Fiction Reading Skills (4h) Understanding different text types, including narrative and informational texts, identifying author’s purpose, and practicing inference with text-based evidence. Module 5|Applied Reading Practice & Assessment (4h) Applying skills through longer texts, timed reading, comprehension questions, and reflection, with measurable progress visible to students and parents. Learning Outcomes • Improve reading speed by 20–40% • Achieve higher reading comprehension accuracy • Build the stamina to read 20–30 minutes continuously • Approach school reading tasks with greater confidence • Be well prepared for Grade 9 academic reading demands Who This Program Is For • Grade 7–8 students with limited reading volume • Students who read slowly or lose focus easily • Students who understand “some” but not “enough” • Students preparing for the transition to high school
