Course Description

Course Overview The G11–12 English Literature Intensive Program is designed for students preparing for senior high school English courses, university applications, and academically demanding assessments. At this stage, English is no longer about basic comprehension. Students are expected to analyze literature, interpret author’s choices, and write structured, evidence-based responses. Many students can follow the storyline but struggle with deeper analysis, literary terminology, and academic writing expectations. This program provides systematic training in: Literary reading → Analytical thinking → Academic writing It builds the skills required for Ontario G11–12 English (University Prep) and prepares students for post-secondary academic standards. Learning Objectives • Analyze novels, short stories, plays, and poetry • Identify and explain themes, character development, and conflict • Analyze literary devices and author’s craft • Support interpretations with precise textual evidence • Write clear, organized literary analysis paragraphs • Meet Ontario curriculum expectations for senior English courses Course Structure (30 Hours) Module 1|Introduction to Literary Reading (5h) Understanding the shift from story-level reading to literary analysis, core expectations of senior English courses, and guided close reading techniques. Module 2|Character, Conflict & Theme (6h) Analyzing character development, internal and external conflict, and how themes emerge and evolve through the text. Module 3|Literary Devices & Author’s Craft (6h) Studying symbolism, imagery, metaphor, tone, mood, and how authors use language and structure to convey meaning. Module 4|Textual Evidence & Literary Paragraph Writing (6h) Learning how to select quotations, explain evidence, and write structured literary analysis paragraphs aligned with Ontario rubrics. Module 5|Integrated Literary Study & Assessment Practice (7h) Applying skills through extended text analysis, discussion-based learning, timed writing, and assessment-style tasks. Learning Outcomes • Read literature with greater depth and confidence • Analyze texts using appropriate literary terminology • Write stronger, clearer analytical responses • Use textual evidence effectively • Perform more confidently in senior English assessments • Be better prepared for university-level reading and writing
